OPTIFLEX TRIO – A study in 25 patients corroborates its quality – Dr. Carlos Lisa, Inst. Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega, Oviedo-Spain

A study from Dr. Carlos Lisa and his team at Instituto Oftalmólogico Fernández-Vega (Oviedo-Spain)

The Optiflex Trio lens, a diffractive-refractive intraocular lens, is a good alternative in refractive lens surgery thanks to its good performance. This is known by Dr. Carlos Lisa, from the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega (Oviedo-Spain), who has carried out a study in a group of 25 patients (50 eyes) who were implanted with this trifocal lens.

The inclusion criteria of the study were:

  • Age between 55 and 75 years and
  • Axial length between 22.0 and 26.0 mm

They analyzed:

  • distance visual acuity
  • defocus curve
  • refractive results and
  • the degree of satisfaction was determined by questionnaire.

The performance of the lens was also analyzed through an evaluation in an optical bench.

The defocus curve of this lens shows good visual results with a VA greater than 0.9 from far to near focus (39 cm) and with good tolerance to small refractive errors.

The developed optical bench tests showed a parallelism with the functional and refractive results obtained in the patients. The MTF-TF (50cy/mm) shows the three typical peaks of these trifocal lenses with a predominance of the far focus in 4.5 mm pupils (50/25/25 distribution) and a predominance of the intermediate and near focus in 3mm pupils (40/30/30 distribution).

4.5 mm pupils (distribution 50/25/25)

3.5 mm pupils (distribution 40/30/30)

Although these results are encouraging, Dr. Lisa proposes further studies with a larger number of patients to confirm these good impressions and results he presented in his study during the morning session on Friday at the SECOIR Congress 2023 in Málaga, Spain. The doctor also highlights the importance of performing a premium surgery in order to avoid complications in the short and long term and get the most out of the lens.
